I’m not into astrology. Never have been, don’t think I ever will be. But something that happened recently dealing with astrology perked my ears a bit.
A couple of nights ago, Junior and Morocco Mole introduced me to my chinese astrological symbol: the Earth Sheep. Now, I knew that I was a sheep (or ram, or whatever) because one of the wedding gifts The Wife and I got from a friend of hers was a pair of wooden statuettes, one of a ram, the other of a snake. (The Wife’s birth sign is the fire snake.) I didn’t know about the entire elemental thing, however. (In retrospect it makes perfect sense.) At any rate, I’d never before bothered with the description of the Sheep — let alone the Earth Sheep — but since Junior and Morocco Mole were so emphatically claiming themselves Fire Tigers, I figured I’d check my sign out and see what the buzz was all about.
Jr and the Mole showed me a few pages and, well honestly I was surprised. The description on the page was fairly accurate — about 95% on-the-mark. It was kind of freaky, kind of cool. That night, I went home and read further into it. There wasn’t much to read — I wasn’t about to read the predictions — but what I did read was freakishly on the mark. I then looked up my wife’s symbol and… well… that one wasn’t too accurate. “About 50/50,” according to her.
I’ve reprinted here the applicable info I got on the Earth Sheep for a couple of reasons: (1) for my own, personal entertainment, and (2) for the sake of anyone who wants to know a bit more about me. (Creeps.)
Lamb people have good taste and are quite charming and elegant…and rich. You may find them the center of attention at a stylish dinner party, ravishing all with incomparable wit and bon mots. The opposite is also true: they are often quite shy and sometimes prefer complete anonymity, the quiet life at home with a good book, a roaring fire, and the joys of the palate. A creative flame burns in their lives and you may find them before a canvas experimenting with bright bold genius strokes of paint. Sometimes, they tend to be pessimistic and question the meaning of life, wondering “why they dwell among green mountains.” They are quite often deeply religious or spiritual and quite passionate about their work and their belief.Lamb people have good taste and are quite charming and elegant … and rich. Like all Lambs, these creatures are wonderful to socialize with, you just can’t help loving their friendly ways and enthusiasm for living…As you can imagine, they make the best of traveling companions. Earth Lambs are honorable in all their dealings; they roll up their sleeves and do whatever it is that must be done…They know true contentment because they can think of yesterday without regret and tomorrow without fear. Earth Lambs love good books and spend many happy hours seeking treasures in used bookstores. This serious nature also applies to their college years and careers, which they pursue with utmost dedication, hard work, and diligence.

(From http://www.usbridalguide.com/special/chinesehoroscopes/Sheep.htm. I’ve posted only those things which apply to me. The rest can be read at the site.)
Sheep simply want a bit of peace. They enjoy carrying on with life in their own quiet, individual way, content to be in the middle of it all rather than to be leading it. Sheep are quiet and calm people. They enjoy cultural things and focus much of their energy on artistic hobbies. Sheep are easygoing and relaxed, happy to be going with the flow.
People born in the Year of the Sheep share certain characteristics. The Sheep Sign is an abbreviated way of characterizing that individual’s personality. Following are features associated with the Sign of the Sheep.
Eight in order, Chinese name – YANG, sign of the arts (My degree is in Music Composition)
Hour – 1pm-2:59pm
Month – July
Western Counterpart – Cancer (Actually, I’m a Sagitarius)
CHARACTERISTICS – Smart, Artistic, Kind, Happy, Reserved, Insecure, Dependent
THE EARTH SHEEP 19l9 AND 1979 – The Earth element gives the Sheep a grounded effect. Although he struggles with a lack of self-confidence, this Sheep is a very stable person. They are independent and practical, leaning more towards conservancy than liberality. An Earth Sheep’s family is his most important asset and he spends his life working hard to provide for his loved ones. Earth Sheep are born with a joy for life that generally becomes infectious as you get to know him.
HEALTH – A Sheep’s serenity often prohibits him from health problems. Although they seem fragile on the outside, inside Sheep are quite healthy creatures. Happiness keeps the Sheep healthy. However, any sort of trouble or confrontation will send the Sheep’s stomach spinning, especially if it is due to a romantic problem. As happiness keeps the Sheep healthy, unhappiness makes him quite sick.
AT HOME WITH THE SHEEP – Sheep truly enjoy being at home. (Not true) They spend their time there doing arts and crafts, cooking and knitting. (Yes, save for the knitting) Sheep are most comfortable on their couches in the privacy of their homes, relaxed and tranquil. (true) Their homes are as simple as they like to feel.(Define “simple”.) They are elegant and timeless, and their homes reflect their artistic flair. (YESS!)The Sheep will go to any expense to be comfortable and to enjoy convenience. (Very true)
THE SHEEP AT WORK – Sheep people like the comfort of a crowd. They enjoy adding input and opinions but do not wish to take a lead position. Sheep will take a leadership role is asked, but generally prefer to be a part of the group. They do not seek positions of power or status as these things are not important to the Sheep.
MONEY AND THE SHEEP – Sheep generally appear well-off. They love to spend money but do not find comfort or satisfaction in material things. They do have a knack with money though, which is well-suited for a person who spends money like the Sheep does. Sheep are always dressed to a T, looking well-groomed and well-dressed.
Those born ion the Year of the Sheep share the same kinds of goals and objectives in life. The occupations best suited for the Sheep are listed below:
SHEEP MAKE EXCELLENT:
– Editors (Been that)
– Actors (Been that)
– Interior designers (Love doing that)
– Florists (Like it, but I’d rather be doing something else with my time)
– Hairdressers (*heh* Not quite, but I do like to play with hair)
– Illustrators (Been that)
– Musicians (Beeeeeeeeeen that. Big time.)
– Daycare teachers (Been a teacher)
– Art historians (Music History, actually)
LIKES AND DISLIKES – Since Sheep are born under the same Animal Sign, they often share likes and dislikes. Following are similar likes and dislikes of the Sheep personality.
– Color Preference: Pink, purple (Purple, yes; Pink, no)
– Gems and Stones: Moonstone, Sapphire, Jade (uhm…???)
– Suitable Gifts: bathrobe, broach, peppermint oil, seashells, massage, theater tickets (Close enough. I’ll take the massage any day, but then again, who wouldn’t?)
– Hobbies and Pastimes: Reading, watching movies, eating, drinking, swimming (All except drinking. Unless it’s Kahlua.)
– Sheep Dislike: Being separated from family and friends, conflict, not having the support of others (Uhm… who doesn’t?)
THE SHEEP ON VACATION – As Sheep find safety in numbers, they also like to travel with other people. (hmm…) Sheep enjoy guided tours of artistic places like museums, gardens or theaters. (Actually, not generally. I like to do my own exploring) They are also drawn to water and thus enjoy vacationing at the beach or on a cruise. (Dunno about this one)
SHEEP INFANT AND CHILD – Sheep children are very sensitive. They cry at the drop of a hat, especially if their feelings are hurt or they are embarrassed. (Yeah, that describes me as a kid pretty well.)Often they will cry to get what they want. They are dependent on their parents and love to be affectionate with their family, especially their parents. They do not exhibit a great deal of self-confidence so parents and teachers are generally responsible for encouraging them to bring out their artistic natures. They are well-behaved, well-mannered children, who despise aggression and conflict. (Hmm… Does the argumentative side of me count as “conflict”?)
THE SHEEP LOVER – Sheep do not like to be alone. They are very family-oriented people. If you do not like children or big families, Sheep are not right for you. (Yeah, pretty much all true) Sheep will give themselves entirely to the right person and will do everything they can to maintain a stable, loving, happy relationship.
MARRIAGE – Even though Sheep can be clingy and self-deprecating they are loving creatures who make great romantic partners. They are compassionate and kind, genuine and affectionate. A Sheep needs a partner who will be supportive and attentive and who will help him develop his self-confidence. (Ask The Wife about this, but I think it’s a “yes”.)
(I’m born in the Scorpio/Sagitarius cusp, so both of these are applicable, though accuracy may be lacking.)
SCORPIO SHEEP – Scorpio gives the naturally placid Sheep a bit of aggression. It also encourages the Sheep to exhibit independence. (On the mark.) The Scorpio Sheep is desirable and magnetic.
SAGITTARIAN SHEEP – These Sheep need to be self-supporting. They are content as long as they are pursuing or finishing whatever project they wish. They have the ability to take on and finish several projects at once. (VERY VERY VERY VERY true)
So there you go. Now you know me better. The question is, do I know me better.
Answer: Not really. I already knew this about me. But it’s good to know some force of nature coupled with the Psychic Fiends network (yes, that’s a joke) spent the time to describe me well.
